Boje cards 6-under tournament, ties for 11th in Albuquerque
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a 15-team field at the William H. Tucker Invitational, Grand Canyon was tied for 15th after one round at the UNM Championship Course. But a clean-slate mentality saw the Lopes jump seven spots over the next two rounds, including an 11-under-par second round, to finish eighth overall in a loaded field in Albuquerque.
GCU totaled an 11-under score, shooting 4 over, 11 under and 4 under over the course of two days. Facing multiple top-75 teams from last year's national rankings, the Lopes finished ahead of Arizona, Long Beach State, Missouri and New Mexico State.
San Diego State won the tournament at 31 under, followed by New Mexico at 25 under and BYU at 21 under.
Senior Måns Boje placed just outside the top 10 with a tied for 11th finish at 6 under par. Boje went 70/68/72 on the par 72 course with 15 birdies and an eagle over 54 holes. He had eight birdies in round one alone and was nearly flawless over round two, registering five birdies to just one bogey.
Boje's birdie count tied for sixth out of the 88 player field and his par 3 scoring was superb, averaging 2.92 on such holes to tie for fourth best in the field.
Sophomore Daniel Nilsson carded a 3 under total (72/69/72) with 11 birdies, six in the second round to help spearhead a Lopes comeback. He had the second most pars on the squad at 35 in total and tied for 20th place.
The third Lope to place in the top 30 was senior Ben Keil, who had his best finish in a Lopes polo through two tournaments. Keil moved up eight spots Saturday and went 1 under for the tournament, tying for 29th. Six of Keil's 12 birdies came in the final round as he finished with a third-round team best 2 under. He also joined Boje as one of two Lopes with an eagle.
Junior Matthew Diehl tied for 50th at 2 over, followed by senior Gavin O'Neill at 5 over (T-63rd). Diehl shook off a 5 over round one with a 3 under total between rounds two and three, notching 10 of his 11 birdies in that span. O'Neill made the biggest jump up the leaderboard for the Lopes Saturday, moving 13 spots with a 1 under final round that had three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars.
GCU tied for second on par 3 scoring, averaging 3.10 per par 3 hole. The 11 under team score in the second round was tied for fourth best of any team's per round score.
The Lopes take a couple weeks off before heading east to the sunshine state of Florida Oct. 12-14 to compete in the Bryson Invitational at Trump Doral National in Miami.
