TUCSON – Concluding its first tournament in a 12-day span, Grand Canyon tied for eighth place Tuesday in the highly competitive Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club.
GCU finished with a 2-over-par card, joining UTEP and New Mexico State with that score. The tournament consisted of five teams ranked in the top 35 of the Clippd Scoreboard Rankings with No. 22 Arizona, the host, winning with a 25-under score. No. 32 Long Beach State placed second (24 under) and Colorado took third (21 under).
The Lopes began the day finishing up a handful of holes from the second round that was suspended due to darkness Monday. The squad shot 2 under over the third and final round with three players shooting even or better.
Sophomore
Nixon Lauritzen led GCU with a 2-under total, tallying 12 birdies for the tournament with four coming Tuesday. He shot a 3.90 average on par-four holes to tie for fifth best in the 81-player field.
Classmate Måns Boje finished 1 over for the tournament and one spot back of Lauritzen in the birdie count at 11. Boje shot 1 over Tuesday and placed 35th overall.
After starting 2 over through 18 holes, Lopes freshman
Daniel Nilsson carded a 1-over score over his final 36 holes with two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars in the third round. Nilsson finished 40th at 3 over.
Junior
Gavin O'Neill had the Lopes' best third round of the day, going 3 under with six birdies, including four on the front nine. His 3-under 69 was GCU's second-lowest individual round of the tournament behind Boje's opening-round 68. The Irishman finished 48th at 5 over. Sophomore teammate
Matthew Diehl placed 59th at 8 over with eight birdies.
GCU's 48 birdies were eighth most among all teams, while its 6-over score on par-3 holes tied for fifth best with Long Beach State.
The Lopes head to the Pacific Northwest for two tournaments in a one-week span, beginning Monday in Eugene, Oregon, for the Duck Invitational.
