Grand Canyon junior golfer
Matthew Diehl will return to the U.S. Amateur Championship after surviving a highly competitive event that cut 11 players who played below-par rounds Monday.
Diehl's second consecutive U.S. Amateur qualifying achievement came on the merit of a 2-under-par round of 69 at Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo, California. Diehl birdied his first two holes of the tournament and finished at 2 under when he recorded pars on the final 10 holes of the 6,9997-yard course.
Qualifying for the U.S. Amateur began with more than 5,000 players before about 1,500 advanced through local qualifying or exemptions, including GCU teammates
Nixon Lauritzen and
Trey Moore. The first five of 14 U.S. Final Qualifying tournaments were held Monday with Diehl's event advancing 14 to the 126th U.S. Amateur Championship, which will take place Aug. 10-16 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
