MISSOULA, Mont. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up a quick two-match road trip with a 4-1 loss to Montana on Sunday.
The Lopes (1-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after doubles play, but Montana (4-0) turned the momentum around in singles with four win to clinch the dual match and remain undefeated.
For the second consecutive day, it was the Lopes who earned the doubles point to start the match. Lopes graduate
Pablo Carretero Salvador and sophomore
Paolo Rosati picked up their second win of the trip with a 6-1 win at Court 2. On Court 3, it was senior
Wyatt Anderson and junior
Jonathan Da Silva who clinched the 1-0 GCU lead with a 6-3 win. It was the GCU duo's first win of the season.
Lopes graduate
Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore
David Wekesa were leading 4-3 at the top doubles court before their match was left unfinished.
In singles, Montana grabbed momentum winning the first set on four courts. The Grizzles' Tom Bittner defeated Wekesa 6-2, 6-3 at Court 3 to tie up the match before Da Silva lost in straight set at Court 5 to give the Grizzles the lead.
Montana closed out the match with a pair of three-set wins over GCU sophomore
Alfred Almasi at Court 4 and Carretero Salvador at Court 2.
Rosati and Sullwald had their matches abandoned in the third set at Courts 1 and 6.
The Lopes will be back in action for three consecutive home matches against UC Riverside, Santa Clara and Utah State on Feb. 13-18.
