Lopes host weekend homestand

The Grand Canyon men's tennis team continues their homestand with two matches against Santa Clara and Utah State at GCU Tennis Facility. The Lopes are coming off a shutout win over UC Riverside on Tuesday.

3 THINGS TO KNOW

BACK ON TRACK: The Lopes got back on track with a 6-0 shutout over UC Riverside on Tuesday at home. GCU took the doubles point and won five singles in straight sets. It was the first home win for the team this season.
SINGLES SUCCESS: Junior Jonathan Da Silva is off to a hot start in singles play with a 3-1 record. Da Silva is a perfect 2-0 at court four including a 6-3, 6-3 win on Tuesday against the Highlanders.
UNBEATEN DOUBLES: Along with success in singles the Lopes have been strong in doubles with a team record of 8-3. Graduate Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore David Wekesa and graduate Pablo Carretero Salvador and sophomore Paolo Rosati are a combined 6-0 at the top two courts. The Lopes have won the doubles point in three straight matches.

SCOUTING

Santa Clara has started this season with a 4-1 record. The Broncos have won two straight in close 4-3 decisions against UC Davis and UC Irvine before returning to the road where they are 2-0 this season. Christian Lerby has matched the team record with a 4-1 mark at the top singles court while also teaming up with Guillaume Dalmasso at a 5-0 record in doubles.

Utah State is off to a 5-1 start this season. The Aggies lost their first match of the season last week against Denver but boast a 3-0 record on the road. Utah State will face Santa Clara in Phoenix on Saturday before taking on the Lopes on Sunday. As a team the Aggies are 23-9 in singles and 14-1 in doubles play so far this season.

WHAT'S NEXT?

GCU will travel to Arizona State on Feb. 23 and host Nevada on Feb. 24.
