TEMPE, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's and women's swimming teams closed the inaugural Division I Arizona quad meet against Arizona, Northern Arizona and host Arizona State with fast times and strong dives in comparison to this point during the 2023-24 season.
The Lopes experienced some setbacks prior to the meet at ASU with an illness surrounding the team, but that did not stop GCU from focusing on a meet that included unique race formats.
Lopes freshman
Batu Servi took fourth in the men's 600-yard freestyle, closing with a time of 5 minutes, 29.48 seconds.
In the women's 50-yard breaststroke,
Raphaela Nakashima claimed second. The graduate student went 28.20 seconds, finishing ahead of swimmers from Northern Arizona and Arizona State.
On the men's side, graduate
Harper Houk finished fifth in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 25.64 seconds. At this point in the 2023-24 season Houk's best time was 26.0 seconds in the event. Sophomore
Ian Hirota finished right behind Houk with a time of 26.37 seconds, over a second faster then the 27.44 seconds during Hirota's freshman campaign.
One of the unique races came from GCU's
Paula Martinez Moreno, who raced in the 150 butterfly. The junior went 1 minute, 27.46 seconds to take third place.
Lopes senior
Maria Brunlehner went 22.57 in the 50 freestyle to capture first place. At this moment during Brunlehner's junior season, her best time was 23.50 seconds in the same event.
On the GCU men's side, junior transfer
Mario Perez placed fourth (20.10 seconds) with sophomore Guillermo Carey taking fifth (20.59 seconds).
Brunlehner, junior
Kailee Patters, senior
Lauren Hicks and Nakashima combined for a time of 1:33.68 in the 200 freestyle relay for fourth place.
The men also placed fourth behind the relay of junior
Alex Volkov, Carrey, junior
Eli Cohen and Perez finishing in 1:20.23.
The GCU divers made their season debut Saturday with the 1-meter competition.
Sophomore
Lacey Neighbor, a first-year Lope, scored 224.90 points to lead GCU. In the men's section, freshman
Omar Elsayed scored 279.95 points to claim fourth place. This mark is 12 points ahead of the Lopes' leading 1-meter score from the 2023-24 season.
Next, GCU will send five men and five women to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Open Water Championship, which takes place in Long Beach, California. Last season, the GCU men and women each took second to claim the meet's overall win.
The event will take place Saturday at Marine Stadium.
