GCU looks ahead to Jan. 3 at Arizona State for next meet
Grand Canyon delivered a strong showing Saturday against Arizona Christian and Ottawa, highlighted by multiple wins, podium finishes and record-breaking performances at its Phoenix home pool.
GCU senior Marta Guasp led the women's side with three top-three finishes. She claimed first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.50 seconds, finished second in the 100 butterfly at 56.59 and placed third in the 100 individual medley with a time of 57.37.
Lopes junior Joe Stephenson anchored the men's middle-distance events by sweeping his races. He won the 200 butterfly in 1 minutes, 48.87 seconds and followed with a victory in the 200 breaststroke, touching in 2:02.35.
Senior Carter Dooling delivered a strong sprint performance for GCU, capturing first place in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 24.86. He also set a pool record in the 100 breaststroke during a time trial, posting a time of 53.69.
Senior Paula Martinez Moreno reset multiple home pool records for the Lopes. She won the 100 butterfly in a personal-best time of 54.04 and lowered the pool mark in the 50 butterfly with a winning time of 24.77.
Sophomore Beth Young continued the record-setting trend by winning the 50 breaststroke. She set a personal best and a pool record in the event, finishing in 28.14.
Freshman Sara Mose added another pool record on the women's side by breaking the 50 freestyle mark, touching the wall at 22.67.
Senior Tim Koza has tacked on 13 personal bests in the last two weeks.Â
Senior Alex Volkov capped the Lopes' record-breaking performances by setting a pool record of 21.27 in the 50 butterfly.
