The Grand Canyon swimming team is sending 10 student-athletes to the second-annual MPSF Open Water Championships in Long Beach, California, on Saturday.
On the men's side, GCU's
Atu Ambala,
Colin Campbell,
Easton Mousser, Batu Servi and Joe Stephenson in the 5-kilometer race at 9 a.m. Following that, the women's 5K will kick off at 10:30 a.m. The Lopes women will include
Aleksandra Wegrzynowska,
Summer Dean, Vivi Criscione, Maria Chatzi and Krisalyn Henderson.
This year's field includes Biola, California Baptist, Concordia, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Pomona-Pitzer, San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Westmont and Whittier.
Team scoring in the collegiate events will be made up of results achieved in both the 5K and relay events. The top-three individuals and top relay team from each institution will contribute to their team score. Additionally, the top-three collegiate swimmers in the men's and women's 5K races will automatically qualify for the 5K USA Swimming Open Water National Championship as well as the CSCAA National Championship in December.
During the brief interlude between the collegiate 5K and relay events, a Masters 5K and 1K race will be held for adults aged 18 and over, commencing at noon.
Last season, the Grand Canyon swimming team made history by winning the overall title at the first MPSF Open Water Championships, where the Lopes' men's and women's teams each took second place.
