GCU breaks 5 pool records with postseason on deck
Grand Canyon swimming and diving produced an impressive pair of team performances against UNLV on Saturday, highlighted by elite finishes across the men's and women's sides with five home pool records set by Lopes.
GCU freshman Sara Mose won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.90 seconds and captured the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.59.
Lopes senior Paula Martinez Moreno earned first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 59.84 seconds.
Marta Guasp, a GCU senior from Spain, won the 200 backstroke in 1:59.23 and finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.44.
Lopes sophomore Taylor Stasny set a pool record while winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.94 and added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.03.
Fellow GCU sophomore Beth Young won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.91.
Lopes junior Vivi Criscione recorded a second-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:31.82.
Elisa Corradi, a GCU senior from Italy, rounded out the individual women's performances with second-place finishes finished in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.62) and the 200 individual medley (2:02.06).
On the Lopes men's side, senior Alex Volkov won the 100 backstroke (46.74) and the 100 butterfly (pool-record 47.04).
Carter Dooling, a GCU senior from Tucson, won the 100 breaststroke (54.09) and the 200 breaststroke (1:58.90) while also finishing second in the 200 individual medley in 1:52.35.
Fellow Lopes senior Mario Perez of Spain placed second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:47.15.
GCU junior Guillermo Carrey, also from Spain, finished second in the 50 freestyle (20.06) and the 100 freestyle (45.07).
Lopes newcomer Jacob Pins, a sophomore, recorded a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.0.
In diving, sophomore Omar Elsayed swept the events by winning the 1-meter competition with 380.93 points and the 3-meter board with a score of 427.05.
Diving teammate Luke Struiksma, a junior, finished second in the 1-meter event with 303.98 points.
GCU sophomore Brooke Woeslaw won the women's 3-meter diving event with 248.48 points and placed second in the 1-meter competition with a score of 245.85.
Junior teammate Lucinda Harrison placed second in the 3-meter diving with a score of 193.95.
The GCU women's 200 medley relay team of sophomore Luna Ayala, Young, Martinez and Mose set a pool record with a winning time of 1:40.62.
The Lopes men's 200 medley relay team of Volkov, Dooling, Perez and Carrey set a pool record with a winning time of 1:26.54.
The men's 200 freestyle relay of  Perez, Volkov, senior Eli Cohen and Carrey established a pool record with a first-place finish in 1:19.39.
In addition to being the last meet of the regular season, Saturday was the Lopes' day to honor 17 seniors; Kirk Brotherton, Eli Cohen, Carter Dooling, Yigit Eksioglu, Tim Koza, Mohamed Mohamady, Mario Perez, Alex Volkov, Daniel Volkov, Grzegorz Wanat, Elisa Corradi, Marta Guasp, Krisalyn Henderson, Paula Martinez, Kailee Patters, Hailey Sears and Kourtney Smith.
The Lopes will next look toward the conference championship meets. The men's Big West Championships (Feb. 11–14) and the women's Mountain West Championships (Feb. 18–21) will be in Houston with seven Lopes having opportunities to clinch NCAA Championships times.Â
