Lopes post A-final swims, school records, and 488.5 points in loaded Houston meet
HOUSTON – The Lopes closed the 2026 Mountain West Women's Swimming & Diving Championships with a 10th-place team finish and 488.5 points, highlighted by multiple championship-final appearances, school records and an NCAA Cut over four days.Â
San Diego State claimed the title with Washington State placing second. Â
The highlight of the meet for the Lopes came on the final evening fro, Sophomore Taylor Stasny.
The Dyer, Indiana native added a championship-final performance for the Lopes, placing sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.90 , recording a school-record time that was faster than the NCAA B cut. The strong finish places her under consideration for an NCAA Championships invitation, with the automatic qualifier awarded only to the event champion.Â
The fast race from Stasny placing 6th shows just how fast of a meet this Mountain West Championships were.Â
Senior Paula Martinez Moreno made two individual A-final appearances, advancing to the championship heats in both the 100-yard butterfly (54.38) and 200-yard butterfly (2:00.30).
Martinez's performances accounted for two of GCU's top individual finishes of the meet and underscored the Lopes' presence in the butterfly events at the conference level.
The Lopes also picked up valuable scoring through B-final appearances, led by Elisa Corradi in the 200-yard individual medley, where she finished 13th overall and contributed key points to the team total.
Relays provided some of the Lopes' most impactful moments of the meet.
GCU's best relay finish came in the 400 medley relay, where Beth Young delivered a school-record 1:00.47 split on the breaststroke leg, setting a new program benchmark and helping elevate the Lopes' relay scoring.
Sara Mendoza contributed lifetime bests in the 200 freestyle in both the individual (1:49.22) and the 800 freestyle relay split (1:48.21).
On the diving boards, Brooke Woeslaw added a scoring performance by contributing 12 points in platform diving, further strengthening the Lopes' overall team total.
Additional milestones came in the sprint events, where Katelyn Huffman posted a lifetime-best 23.16 in the 50-yard freestyle, matching the mark in both prelims and finals.
Sophomore Luna Ayala also recorded a qualifying time in the 50-yard butterfly to earn a berth at the NIC Championships, extending the Lopes' postseason representation beyond the conference meet.
The Lopes will look ahead to Zone E Diving Championships in Flagstaff, Arizona, as well as CSCAA National Invational Championships in Ocala, Florida.
