Lopes defeat Wildcats' top swimmers in multiple events
TUCSON, Ariz. — Grand Canyon swimming and diving opened its season with a strong showing at the Arizona Division I Meet at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, collecting several top finishes and program-first relay records against some of the nation's top competition.
The Lopes went head to head with nationally ranked programs, including the No. 5 men's and No. 18 women's teams from Arizona State.
GCU junior Guillermo Carrey had a strong swim on the men's side with an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking 44.18 seconds.
Lopes senior Mario Perez added a standout performance in the 50 freestyle, finishing fourth in 19.77 seconds and defeating Arizona's top swimmer in the event.
In a homecoming meet, Tucson native and GCU senior Carter Dooling secured seventh place for GCU in the 100 breaststroke with a strong time of 55.57.Â
The Lopes' men's 100 freestyle relay team capped the meet by taking third at 35.61, topping Arizona and setting a new program standard in the event.
On the GCU women's side, senior Paula Martinez Moreno took fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.63 seconds.
Sophomore Taylor Stasny posted an impressive 2:02.76 in the 200 individual medley to claim fourth place in her Lopes debut, defeating Arizona's top competitor. Senior teammate Elisa Corradi placed seventh in the same race at 2:04.65.
GCU senior Marta Guasp recorded a 55.96 in the 100 backstroke, and sophomore teammate Beth Young placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:02.17.
The Lopes women's 100 freestyle relay team also earned third place, touching in 42.46 and defeating Arizona while setting a team record.
The multiple top-four individual finishes against high-level competition set the tone for an exciting GCU campaign.
On the diving side, Lopes sophomore Omar Elsayed placed fourth in the 1-meter event, scoring 325.15 points.Â
The GCU women's squad picked up a dual meet win against 12-time WAC champion Northern Arizona.Â
The Lopes will send swimmers from the men's and women's squads to the MPSF Open Water Championships on Saturday in Long Beach, California, before going to swim at Hawai'i the following weekend.
