LONG BEACH, Calif.  — Grand Canyon swimmers earned a strong team finish at the MPSF Open Water Championships on Saturday, posting multiple top-10 performances in the men's and women's 5K races while recording solid relay efforts.
On the men's side, sophomore
Batu Servi led the Lopes with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter freestyle, clocking in at 59 minutes, 7.67 seconds to help the team secure a runner-up team total with 110 points.
Servi's time came down to a brief run to the finish line. He stumbled slightly getting out of the water, leading to his finish being less than two seconds behind the winner.Â
Servi was closely followed by junior
Colin Campbell (10th, 1:03:53.0) and junior
Joe Stephenson (13th, 1:04:16.9), while freshman
Rex Biebel (17th, 1:05:04.46) and senior
Mario Perez (23rd, 1:08:02.77) provided additional scoring depth.
In the men's 2,000-meter freestyle relay, the GCU quartet of Servi, Perez, Stephenson and Campbell placed third with a time of 25:15.79, adding key points to the team total.
GCU ultimately finished second out of nine men's teams behind California Baptist, which scored 135 points.
On the women's side, junior
Vivi Criscione placed 16th in the 5K with a time of 1:04:57.0.
Criscione was followed closely by sophomore teammate
Kaitlyn Logue in 24th (1:05:53.0).
Senior
Elisa Corradi (33rd, 1:07:16.0), junior
Summer Dean (39th, 1:07:54.0) and senior
Marta Guasp (41st, 1:09:04.0) rounded out GCU's lineup.
The women's relay team of Guasp, Criscione, Dean and Logue placed sixth in the 2,000-meter freestyle relay with a time of 26:47.0.
The Lopes scored 56 points to finish seventh out of 17 in the women's team standings, which was won by Rice.
