The indoor track and field season is here for the highly anticipated Grand Canyon track and field program.
A select group of Lopes will get things going this weekend in Spokane, Washington, in the team's second-ever December meet.
"We all are excited to get this season started this weekend at The Podium, one of the finest indoor facilities in the country," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "It's a great opportunity to compete against high-level teams such as Washington, Washington State, Boise State and Gonzaga, which should definitely lead to some fast early-season times/marks."
The last time GCU was at The Podium, the men's team took home its seventh straight WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships title.
Flood returns in his 14th season as the head of the program. The 23-time WAC Coach of the Year (indoor and outdoor seasons for men's and women's track and field) has the same simple goal as years past — to keep getting better and keep winning.
"We are traveling with a small but very talented group of sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and mid-distance runners and thrilled at the chance to see the results of our great fall training," Flood said.
The traveling party of 25 student-athletes includes multiple Lopes NCAA Regional qualifiers from last spring's outdoor season, as well as some highly touted transfer talent.
"I'm excited to see the continued GCU success of all of our defending conference champions, as well as watch the performances of some very impressive newcomers, including Jojo Harding, Brendan Hebert, Jack Hodge, Germain Lemaitre, James Smith II and Neysia Howard," Flood said.
The athletes who are not traveling competed in an intrasquad competition at GCU during the week.
"We were also very excited to see all of our other talented athletes' performances at our yearly intrasquad this week before heading into the holiday break," Flood said.
The Spokane Invitational will begin at 10 a.m. (Phoenix time) on Saturday and conclude around 7 p.m.
