LAS VEGAS — Grand Canyon had a successful weekend in Nevada after sending a sprinter and hurdle heavy based group. The men's squad picked up their first title of the outdoor season.
The sprinters started out strong with top finishes across the board.
On the men's side, the senior duo of Miguel Rosario and
Justin Raines had the top two times in the 200-meter dash. Rosario finished with a time of 20.36 and Raines was just behind him with a time of 20.48.
With these times Rosario is currently sitting at first in the Mountain West as well as the NCAA West Region.
The pair had top three finishing times in the 100-meter dash as well with Raines finishing second (10.24) and Rosario finishing in third (10.25).
The men's 4x400 relay secured a first-place finish as well with a time of 3:11.69.
On the women's side, the sprint group showed great strides.
Sophomore duo
Nina Thevenin and
Cassie Small showed out with top five finishes in the women's 200-meter dash. Thevenin finished fourth with a time of 23.52 and Small finished just behind her with a time of 23.53.
Thevenin's time sits at second in the Mountain West Conference.
In jumps the Lopes also had a great showing led by graduate
Taryn Burkett and freshman
Kailani Forbes.
The pair broke GCU records in this meet as Taryn beat her own record in the triple jump. Burkett jumped at the 13-meter mark (42'8") finishing first while also setting a new school record.
Forbes was able to set a new freshman record as well in the triple jump with a mark of 12.17 meters (39' 11").
The Lopes are back this week Friday as they head to Azusa for the Bryan Clay Multi, they will then compete at Glendale Community College on Saturday.
