LAS VEGAS — Grand Canyon had a successful weekend in Nevada after sending a sprinter- and hurdler-heavy group. The GCU men's squad picked up its first title of the outdoor season at the UNLV Rebel ELITE.
The Lopes sprinters started out strong with top finishes across the board.
On the men's side, the senior duo of Miguel Rosario and
Justin Raines had the top two times in the 200-meter dash. Rosario won the race in 20.36 seconds with Raines just behind him at 20.48.
Rosario's time is the fastest in the Mountain West and the NCAA West Region this season while also being second in the NCAA.
The pair also finished in the top three of the 100-meter dash, with Raines taking second (10.24) and Rosario placing third (10.25).
The GCU men's 4x400 relay also won in a time of 3 minutes, 11.69 seconds.
On the women's side, the GCU sprint group also showed great strides.
Sophomore duo
Nina Thevenin and
Cassie Small showed out with top-five finishes in the 200-meter dash. Thevenin took fourth with a time of 23.52 and Small was a hair behind her at 23.53.
Thevenin's time sits at second in the Mountain West.
In jumps, the Lopes also had a great showing led by graduate
Taryn Burkett and freshman
Kailani Forbes.
The pair broke GCU records with Burkett improving her program best in the triple jump with a 13-meter winning mark (42 feet, 8 inches).
With this Burkett stands at first in the Mountain West as well as fifth in the NCAA West Region.
Forbes was able to set a Lopes freshman record wtih a triple jump of 12.17 meters (39 feet, 11 inches).
The Lopes are back this week Friday when they head to Azusa, Califronia, for the Bryan Clay Multi before competing at Glendale Community College on Saturday.
