MESA, Ariz. — The Grand Canyon senior duo of
Germain Lemaitre and
Maria Sartin started out the Carvel Jackson Memorial Track and Field Showcase with a couple of school records Saturday at Mesa Community College.
Sartin, who had just won the New Zealand national 400-meter hurdle championship, set a GCU record in the event Saturday with a winning time of 59.63 seconds.
Lemaitre also showed out by breaking a school record of 1 minute, 47 seconds in the 800-meter run.
The Lopes relay teams also had fantastic showings this week with new GCU records.
The GCU men's squad, who finished first in the 4x100 relay, consisted of seniors
Justin Raines,
Jacob Holguin, Miguel Rosario and
Conner Kittleson win in a record-setting 39.09 seconds.
With this strong showing, the men's relay ranks third in the West Region and fifth in the nation.
On the women's side, GCU graduate
Atena Rayson, senior
Hannah Smith, sophomore
Cassie Small and sophomore
Nina Thevenin finished in first with a time of 44.18 in the 4x100 meter relay, breaking a 13-year-old GCU record.
Outside of these performances, GCU had other strong showings.
Senior
Taliyah Booker finished first in the 400 with a time of 53.52 while senior Tarynn Burkett won the triple jump with a mark of 39 feet 4 inches. GCU junior
Tristen Coyle also secured a first-place finish in the 1,500 with a time of 3:47.36.
The Lopes will head to Las Vegas this weekend to compete with sprinters and hurdlers in the Rebel Invitational.
