Coming off a hard-fought indoor season in its first Mountain West year, Grand Canyon track and field opened the outdoor season with several winners at this weekend's Cody McBride Invitational in Phoenix.
The Lopes scored in many of the 20 events with one of the first standouts being senior
Germain Lemaitre, who finished first in the men's 800-meter run.
Lemaitre ran a time of 1 minute, 49.44 seconds and is looking to have a huge outdoor season after finishing third at the Mountain West Indoor Championships.
In the 100-meter hurdles, GCU graduate
Amanda Thrue picked up a first-place finish in 14.31 seconds.
GCU is looking to continue its distance-running momentum for the outdoor season, where five Lopes entered the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the meet at Paradise Valley Community College.
Graduate Jagger Zlotoff also won the 5,000, finishing in 14:38.91. Zlotoff was big for the Lopes in the indoor season, when he reached the 1-mile final.
GCU picked up where they left off with the jumps portion of the meet, with junior
Weston Means winning the high jump. Freshman
Kailani Forbes and freshman
Jade Williams secure first place in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.
The scoring did not stop at the track events as the Lopes competing in the field events had a great showing.
Junior
Harrison Cornell and freshman
Juliana Garcia each won the discus throw.
After a successful first outdoor meet, the Lopes head next to the Carvel Jackson Memorial Track and Field Showcase on March 28 at Mesa Community College.
