GLENDALE, Ariz. - Grand Canyon turned in a strong all-around showing Saturday at the Glendale Invite, piling up event victories across the track and field slate with strong performances in the sprints, middle distance and jumps.
On the track, junior
Suraia Amer added a 24.88 in the 200-meter with graduate
Amanda Thrue (25.04) and freshman Adi Hunt (25.22) following behind.
Senior
Maria Sartin posted a second-place finish as well in the 400-meter hurdles finishing in 1:01.59. The Lopes had a strong showing in the women's 800 meter as well with sophomore winning the event in 2:18.71.
Freshman Isabella Velazquez had a top place finish in the 1500 meter as well finishing in 4:47.76
The men had a productive showing on the track as well. In the 400 meter the Lopes were able to take the top two spots with sophomore
Luca Cannizzo finishing first in 48.29.
Senior
Jarron Stevens finished second (48.81) as he has been healing up a hamstring injury from the Mountain West Indoor Championships.
The men's squad had a strong showing in distance today with junior
Tristen Coyle finishing first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.51.
Sophomore
Alex Saldamando finished second in the 1500 meter as well finishing in 3:59.31
The field events were equally productive for GCU. Junior
Praise Jibunor delivered one of the top performances of the day, winning both the men's high jump (2.07 meters/6 feet 9.5 inches) and long jump (7.42 meters/24 feet 4.25 inches).
Sophomore
Jezelle Santiago added a women's high jump top finish by clearing 1.58 meters (5 feet 2.25 inches), while freshman
Genevieve Tebeau claimed the women's long jump at 5.70m (18 feet 8.5 inches).
Junior
Chloe Metz won the women's pole vault at 3.81m (12-6), and sophomore
Madyson Goodman (11.30 meters 37 feet) with sophomore Lilly Cook (36 feet 6.25 inches) finished second and third, respectively, in the women's triple jump.
GCU also saw strong throws results, highlighted by freshman
Juliana Garcia placing third in the women's hammer throw at 47.01m (154 feet 2 inches) and adding a fourth-place javelin finish. \
Sophomore
Harrison Cornell led the men's discus group with a third-place mark of 47.11m (154 feet 6 inches).
The Lopes look forward to the Bryan Clay Invitational next weekend as they head to Azusa.
