SPOKANE, Wash. — The Grand Canyon track and field season debut did not disappoint.
The Lopes' Spokane Invitational squad included numerous impressive early-season performances and five program records, including graduate
Erin Brown running the nation's fastest 200-meter dash time of the indoor season thus far.
"The Lopes had a great day at the Oval Office," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said. "For a December meet that was supposed to be just a rust-buster, we had several school records and a lot of amazing midseason-type performances."
At the conclusion of the meet, the Lopes have 13 WAC-leading performances.
"We were led today by
Erin Brown's school record of 20.79 in the 200-meter dash," Flood said.
Brown, a senior, not only now holds the school record, but the mark is the fastest 200 time in the country, outrunning the 20.92 that Kentucky's Kennedy Lightner posted on Friday in Indiana.
GCU graduate student James Smith II did not take long to make his presence felt in a Lopes uniform.
Smith II broke the 600 school record (1:18.51) in his GCU debut.
After a strong cross country season, senior
Cannon Angotti got his indoor season going by breaking the school record in the 3,000-meter competition with a time of 8:17.52.
"I thought that newcomer Neysia Howard had a fantastic day with conference-leading performances in the 60-meter dash (7.56), the 200 meter (24.27) and long jump (5.75 meters)," Flood said of the Arizona graduate transfer.
In pole vault, junor
Eric Cabais-Fernandez placed second with a mark of 5.05 meters.
"It was also nice to see Eric clear 5 meters this early in the year and lead the conference," Flood said.
The Lopes next meet will take place Jan. 12 at the NAU Axe 'Em Open in Flagstaff, Arizona.
"We will now take a break for finals and the Christmas Holidays but I already can't wait to get back at it after the first of the year and continue to watch our student-athletes continue to shine," Flood said.
