The Grand Canyon indoor track and field team will bring the full roster to the first competition of the new year Friday at the NAU Axe 'Em Open in Flagstaff.
The Lopes will hope to build on its season-opening meet, which took place in Spokane, Washington, on Dec. 9.
"We all are very excited for our indoor season to begin as a complete team," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said. "We had an impressive December opener in Spokane but are now thrilled to have a chance to watch everyone compete this Friday at NAU."
During that select group of Lopes athletes competing, GCU had three school records broken by way of senior
Erin Brown, graduate
James Smith II and senior
Cannon Angotti. In addition to Brown, graduate
Neysia Howard and junior
Eric Cabais-Fernandez earned WAC honors.
"We've had outstanding practices this fall, in all event areas, and will once again have very well-balanced teams," Flood said. "As always with our first indoor meet, we will try and shake off a little holiday rust."
Not only is it the first meet of the season for a lot of the athletes, but it is also the first meet in a GCU uniform for numerous athletes.
Senior
Daviciea McCartney will be competing for the first time in more than a year after sitting out due to transferring from Sam Houston. The squad also includes other transfers ready to make a mark for the Lopes.
"We look to begin our run to defend both our men's and women's team WAC indoor titles in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this year," Flood said. "As always, we will rely on our veterans' leadership and are also excited to watch all of our super-talented newcomers compete."
GCU will compete in the WAC for yet another indoor title. The Lopes men look to secure their eighth straight WAC indoor championship.
"If both of our teams stay healthy and hungry, we will have an excellent chance for both teams to be standing on the top of the WAC podium again this year," Flood said.
