MOSCOW, Idaho — The Grand Canyon swimming and diving teams wrapped up the weekend's meet with a record of 5-1, the only loss coming to the women Friday against Idaho in a close 135-146 dual meet.
The Lopes had numerous relay performances that will put the conference on notice. To start the meet, the women's 200-yard medley relay which consisted of graduate student
Briana Rittenbach, senior
Raphaela Nakashima, sophomore
Paula Martinez Moreno, and junior
Maria Brunlehner went with a screaming time of 1 minute 41.91 seconds with the next team coming in almost three seconds later.
The men also placed first and second in the 200 medley relay with the team of freshman
Guillermo Carrey Bosque, sophomore
Jonathan Rom, junior
Sam Jennings, and junior
Vitaly Kostin going 1:31.59.
In the men's 100 breaststroke. The Lopes went first and second with
Carter Dooling (56.37) and
Jonathan Rom (56.73).
Aleksandra Wegrzynowska got her season rolling with a win in the 200 butterfly where she had a time of 2:06.04.
Paula Martinez Moreno and Marta Guasp Bauza placed first and second in the 200 backstroke. The Spanish natives went 2:03.25 and 2:05.12.
In the men's 100 freestyle,
Alex Volkov (46.02) and
Eli Cohen (46.73) took first and second place.
Transfer
Elisa Corradi (2:22.84) joined Nakashima (2:20.46) in dominant one-two finishes in the women's 200 breaststroke.
"It was a good meet, we swam very well over both days and are well ahead of where we were this time last year," head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "Idaho was much faster than we anticipated and so our line up was a little soft so they got us on Friday, but we tweaked the line up today and the women really responded well to get the win."
In diving, the Lopes showed well in the Platform competition.
Isaac Poole and
Reece Robles scored 330.53 and 294.83 while freshman Luci Harrison placed third in her first collegiate meet with a score of 218.93.
Next up for the Lopes, the team will travel to Riverside, Calif. to face off with Seattle, Denver, and CBU.
