The Grand Canyon men's tennis team will continue the fall season this weekend at the UC Santa Barbara Fall Classic.
The Lopes will compete alongside other California schools such as Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, UCLA, UC Irvine, San Diego State, Westmont and Pepperdine in the three-day event.
For a majority of the team this will be the first event of the fall. Graduate students
Gerhard Sullwald and
Pablo Salvador both competed for the Lopes last weekend at the ITA All-American Championships. It was the first time the Lopes have competed in the national competition and Sullwald and Salvador landed in the pre-qualifying rounds.
Salvador won his opening round match against Stetson's Lucas Olivier 6-4, 6-1 before retiring after dropping his first set 7-6 in the second round against Oklahoma's Luis Valdes. Sullwald lost his opening match to Chattanooga's Cortland Grove in three sets.
This weekend the Lopes will be spread out throughout three singles and doubles flights. In singles, junior
Jonathan Da Silva and Sullwald line up in Flight A while returners
Alfred Almasi,
Paolo Rosati and
David Wekesa are in Flight B. Senior
Wyatt Anderson will face Cal Poly's Wian Roothman in Flight C.
In doubles Almasi and Rosati will team up while Anderson and Da Silva partner after finishing 4-1 together last season. Sullwald and sophomore
David Wekesa matchup for the first time this fall.
