TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team competed in its first fall tournament over the weekend, traveling south for the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona.
Eight players competed for GCU and the team finished with seven combined wins across five singles and two doubles draws.
In singles, the Lopes saw a strong debut by freshman
Ntal Richards. The Scottsdale native defeated San Diego State's Lennart Melzer 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of the top singles flight. In the same bracket, junior
Wyatt Anderson picked up a straight-set win over New Mexico State's Vassanth Mathan for one of three GCU wins over the rival Aggies.
The win by Richards over SDSU's Melzer was the first of three wins by the Lopes over the Mountain West opponent. GCU freshman
Paolo Rosati took down the Aztecs' Mathieu Josserand in straight sets in the third singles flight while teammate
Jonathan Da Silva, the 2020 WAC Freshman of the Year, took down Andre Saleh 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, the Lopes faced stiff competition and were able to pick up two wins in the second flight. Richards and Anderson carried over their singles success and defeated NMSU's Mathan and Henrik Lynum in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6). Farther down the bracket, Rosati teamed up with sophomore
Martim Marujo for a 6-4 win against New Mexico State's Itay Feigin and Jordy Visser.
The Lopes and first-year head coach
Derek Siddiqui will continue to train for the rest of September and prepare for the annual ITA Southwest Regionals, hosted by Pepperdine from Oct. 20-24.
