The Grand Canyon track and field teams will compete in an outdoor meet for the first time since 2019 when they head to Tucson for the Willie Williams Classic on Friday and Saturday at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
"We are really excited to begin our regular outdoor season," GCUÂ head coach
Tom Flood said. "It's been over a year for our returners and over two years since our freshman athletes have competed in an outdoor meet."
Friday's events include a full day of field and distance events beginning at noon. The meet will wrap up Saturday with mostly running events, which will go from 11:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
The last time the Lopes competed in an official outdoor meet was the 2019 WAC Outdoor Championships. The women clinched a title, and the men fell short to be runner-up. Both teams look to bring home this season's WAC Outdoor Championship titles in May.Â
Previously at the Air Force Collegiate Open, GCU seniors
Josh Onwordi and
Madelyn Lundberg were able to drive their performances to the next level as they won events in long jump and pole vault, respectively. Strong results are expected from these veteran athletes as they begin their outdoor seasons.Â
"We will definitely start off with a bang by competing against some of the top teams in the nation such as Texas A&M, Northern Arizona, Arizona State and Arizona," Flood said.
Another Lopes student-athlete to keep an eye on is freshman
Gabriel Binion. This Australian native posted impressive performances as the triple jump runner-up at the Air Force Collegiate Open and he almost broke All-American Kevin Lashley's school record in triple jump at the GCU Outdoor Invitational.Â
On the women's side, Lopes senior
Anaya Bailey returns to competition after an injury at the GCU Indoor Collegiate/Open. This Arizona State transfer looks to prove herself in the 60- and 200-meter races this weekend.Â
"This weekend will be a great first step in our preparation for trying to win a couple more WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May," Flood said.Â
