The Grand Canyon track and field teams completed the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson with their second day of competition Saturday. The Lopes broke another school record, but this time in the shot put by junior
Deshon Toney.Â
"It was a wonderful Arizona day to have a track and field meet," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said. "We started off Day 2 with another broken school record."Â
The meet began with a bomb from Toney as he threw a shot put of 16.45 meters on his first attempt. Junior
Moataz Hassan previously held the GCU shot put record at 16.33 meters from the 2019 Bryan Clay Invitational. The Lopes are bringing home three new school records from the throwing team's performances this weekend.
Lopes senior
Madelyn Lundberg had an outdoor personal best and won the pole vault event at 4.10 meters. Not far behind was senior
Alyson Schwartz with a vault of 3.91 meters in third place.
Nigerian native
Onome Ogbeni competed in her first official meet with the Lopes and posted an impressive discus throw of 46.81 meters. She finished in sixth place.Â
Another impressive GCU performance was competed by redshirt sophomore
Aidan Diggs in the 110-meter hurdles. The multi-event athlete came in fifth place with a time of 14.80 seconds, which surpassed NCAA qualifier William Winfield's sixthp-lace finish with a time of 15.11.
In the 800-meter race, Lopes senior
Alexa Hokanson was runner-up in the competition with a time of 2 minutes, 9:40 seconds. She was two seconds away from beating her personal GCU school record.Â
"I was very pleased with our men's 4-by-100 meter relay opener, Maddie Lundberg in the pole vault,
Onome Ogbeni in the discus,
Aidan Diggs in the 110-meter hurdles, and
Alexa Hokanson in the 800 meters," Flood said.
The men's 400-meter relay battled through the race to finish in 40.56 with juniors
David Kolar and
Kyle DeMoica, as well as sophomores
Jan Kral and
Adam Knuff.
"We will get back to work to get even better for next week's meet in San Diego," Flood said. "The SDSU Aztec International meet will have some of the best teams in the country."
The Lopes will travel to San Diego on Thursday to compete at the Aztec Invitational.
