PULLMAN, Wash. — The Grand Canyon women's swimming team fell 126-74 in a dual meet at Washington State on Friday, when Lopes freshman
Aleksandra Wegrzynowska showed out bigtime against Pac-12 competition.
"We did a good job of racing a very good Pac-12 team today," GCU head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "Despite the heavy trading phase we are in right now, our women did not back down and showed nice improvements on the racing skills we have been working on. I am really excited to see how we do as we rest up for the Miami Invitational in a few weeks."
Wegrzynowska, who is from Poland, had a fantastic day after she totaled 18 points for the Lopes and earned season-best times in her events. She won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10 minutes 41.83 seconds and the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 2:05.75.
It was a day for progress and improvements. GCU came to compete but still came up short against Washington State. The Lopes claimed second place in seven of 11 events.

Raphaela Nakashima started the event with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.35. Banic battled the Cougars' Chloe Larson in the last leg for a difference of 0.25 seconds.
The Lopes earned two top-three finishes in the 50 freestyle to start the individual portion of the meet. Muteti finished second with a time of 23.89 and Banic came in third with a time of 24.11 after battling Larson once again.

Maria Brunlehner had herself a day, finishing second in the 200 individual medley (2:07.49) and the 100 freestyle (52.15). Senior
Robyn Edwards earned second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.59. In the 500 freestyle, junior
Briana Rittenbach took home a second-place finish, posting a time of 5:19.71.
Nakashima claimed second in the 200 breaststroke while freshman
Lauren Briggs placed fourth after shaving off nearly five seconds for a season best.
Muteti, Carr, Banic and Brunlehner came up short after earning another second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Banic had the last leg again as she battled the Cougars to the finish in the last 50 in a season-best split of 23.04.
Up next, the Lopes will head to Moscow, Idaho, for a dual meet against the Vandals on Saturday at 11 a.m.
