MOSCOW, Idaho — The Grand Canyon women's swimming and diving team defeated Idaho 171-129 after it swam 14 season-best times, winning 12 of 16 events in the dual meet on Saturday at UI Swim Center.
Relay team A made up of seniors
Claire Banic and
Emily Muteti, junior
Briana Rittenbach and sophomore
Raphaela Nakashima won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of one minute 44.84 seconds. GCU's relay team B set a season-best time of 1:47.09 after taking second place.
Individually, Lopes freshman
Aleksandra Wegrzynowska won three events, earning a new season-best time in all of them. She won the 200 freestyle (1:53.14), 500 freestyle (5:09.40) and the 400 individual medley (4:30.80) where she cut nearly four seconds off her time.
GCU freshman
Maria Brunlehner won the 100 freestyle with a season-best 51.67 seconds. She earned two third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:54.46) and the 400 individual medley (4:38.94).
Lopes senior
Robyn Edwards swam fast in both of her events, earning two new season-best times. She won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.63 and finished second in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 57.51.
Nakashima was the breaststroke queen. She posted two new season-best times against the Vandals and won her respective events. In the 100 breaststroke, she swam it in 1:03.24 and finished the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.18. Freshman
Lauren Briggs also had a new season-best in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:07.88 in the event.
Muteti flew past the Vandals, as she claimed two victories in the 100 butterfly (57.01) and 200 butterfly (2:07.25). Junior
Kaitlyn Carr placed third in the 100 butterfly (58.40), shaving 1.1 seconds off her season best.
Banic won the 50 freestyle earning a season-best time of 23.48 seconds, while teammate Carr took home second in the event (24.09). Banic also placed second in the 100 freestyle, claiming another season-best time of 52.70.
To close out the event, relay team A finished with the win (1:35.83) in the 200 freestyle relay while team B finished in third (1:40.41).
On the springboards, junior
Abigail Erickson placed second on the 3-meter board with a total of 294.08 points for a NCAA zone qualifying score. Erickson also placed second in the 1-meter event with a score of 238.95.
"I thought both girls dove very well," GCU head diving coach Hunter Schafer said. "They had great energy off the boards. The highlight was Abby's zone score and second place finish off the 3-meter."
Freshman
Shiori Bak placed third in the 3-meter event with a score of 272.55 and fourth at 1 meter (237.60).
Up next, the Lopes will travel to Oxford, Ohio, on Dec. 2-4 for the Miami Invitational.
