FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—The Grand Canyon men's tennis team fell 5-2 to NAU on the road on Thursday.
The Lumberjacks (3-1) were coming off a match against Mesa Community College earlier in the day and came out strong against GCU (0-7) taking the doubles point.
In doubles, senior
Lorenzo Fucile was back in the lineup with
Can Franke at No. 1 and the pair won 6-4. NAU would take the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 and a clinching 6-2 at No. 3 over
David Weber and
Justin Cvitanovic, who made his season debut.
It was the first match for the Cvitanovic in 370 days after tearing his ACL early last season.
In singles both NAU grabbed a point quickly after Fucile retired at No. 1 after dropping the first set 6-3. In similar fashion, Weber picked up his fifth win of the season after NAU's Joachim Schaefer retired after losing the first 6-1.
Up 2-1, NAU would clinch the match in back-to-back straight set finishes over
Freddie Grant at No. 3 and
Julian Mueller at No. 6. Senior
Valentin Lang would pick up a point for GCU with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 after the match had already been decided.
The Lopes will look for their first win of the season against San Francisco at home on Saturday at 11 a.m.
