The Grand Canyon men's tennis team fell 5-2 to San Francisco in a match that was closer than the score indicated.
The Dons outlasted the Lopes in doubles at GCU Tennis Facility and followed with three singles victories in three-set matches.
In doubles, GCU and San Francisco was locked in close matches on two courts. Lopes senior

Can Franke won easily 6-2 at No. 1 to put the Lopes in front early. The Dons crawled back by forcing tiebreakers at Nos. 2 and 3.
San Francisco's Paul Giraud and Mitch Johnson outlasted senior
Valentin Lang and junior
Freddie Grant 7-5 in their tiebreaker while Phuc Huynh and David Woodland clinched the point for the Dons by winning 7-4 at No. 3.
Despite the early deficit, the Lopes rebounded well to win the first sets of singles on four courts.
A retirement by Fucile at No. 1 put the Lopes down 2-0 early but GCU freshmen
David Weber and
Julian Mueller each closed out matches in straight sets to get the Lopes back in it.
Tied 2-2, the final three singles matches went to deciding third sets. Franke, at No. 5, forced a third set after winning 7-5 in the second but San Francisco did the same by taking second sets at Nos. 2 and 3.
The Dons outlasted the Lopes in the third sets, taking all three courts with a tiebreaker settling the outcome at No. 2.
The Lopes will hit the road next week for two matches at No. 11 Stanford, where they will face the host Cardinal and visiting Pacific on Feb. 7 and 8, respectively.
