SEATTLE — The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with a 6-1 loss to Cal Poly in Seattle.
GCU freshman
David Weber provided the highlight of the match for the Lopes (0-6) winning 6-4, 6-4 in singles after moving up in the lineup to No. 3. The native of Germany has been the team's most consistent singles player with singles wins from Positions 3-5. He nearly pulled off an upset over Washington's Brandon Wong yesterday, losing 19-17 in a third-set tiebreaker for his lone loss of the season.
Lopes senior
Valentin Lang and junior
Freddie Grant teamed up at No. 1 doubles and won easily 6-1 in their first action together on the doubles court. Cal Poly (1-0) took the point, however, with wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
The Mustangs controlled most of singles, winning in straight sets at Courts 4-6. Lang, at No. 1, and Grant, at No. 2, each played a third-set 10-point tiebreaker with the senior from France being edged 10-8 at the top court and the junior from England losing 10-4 on Court 2.
The Lopes and Mustangs were originally scheduled to start at 5 p.m. but were pushed back two hours due to the Washington women's tennis team hosting an ITA Kickoff event.
The Lopes will look to get back on track with a split week, traveling to Northern Arizona on Jan. 30 before hosting San Francisco at the GCU Tennis Facility on Feb. 1.
