SEATTLE — The Grand Canyon men's tennis team lost 7-0 to Washington on Friday night at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Â
It was the first match of a three-game road trip and while some of the Lopes (0-5) performed well individually, they were unable to transfer tight matches into wins.
Â
In doubles, Washington (4-1) came out strong to take the point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. GCU junior
Freddie Grant and freshman
Julian Mueller found themselves down early 3-0 at No. 2 and were unable to recover in a 6-1 loss while Lopes freshmen
David Weber and
Laurent Magne won games at No. 3 but lost 6-3. For the second time this season, GCU freshman
Can Franke had his doubles match abandoned, occurring this time with senior
Valentin Lang at No. 1. The GCU pair trailed 4-3 when the doubles point was clinched.
Â
In singles, Weber and Mueller nearly pulled off wins in three sets. At No. 4, Weber came out strongly and won the first set 6-4 but lost the second set to force a 10-point third set. The freshman from Germany saved multiple match points against Washington's Brandon Wong before falling 19-17.
Mueller was in a similar situation at No. 5, forcing another 10-point third set after taking the second set against Liam Puttergill. Mueller led 8-5 in the tiebreaker but lost the final five points to give Puttergill a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win.

The Lopes will look for their first win of the season Saturday against Cal Poly at 6 p.m. in Seattle. The Mustangs are playing their first dual match of the season.
