ODGEN, Utah — The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up its opening weekend of the spring season with a 5-2 loss to Weber State.
Individually, Lopes senior
Lorenzo Fucile went 4-0 in singles and doubles over the weekend while freshman teammate
David Weber also was perfect in singles play.
"Today was a little more of the same for the guys," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "It was a close loss with a valiant effort. They are battling. We certainly would have liked to get that doubles point and get the win on the day. But to see them bounce back after yesterday's long, physical close loss, they mentally stayed tough and put themselves on the doorstep again today."
The Wildcats (1-0) took an early 1-0 lead after doubles play, winning at Nos. 2 and 3. The Lopes (0-2) were able to get a win at No. 1 with Fucile and freshman
Can Franke picking up their second victory of the weekend.
"
Can Franke at No. 1 doubles got his second win in a row, which isn't very common, certainly a first for us to see a freshman win his first two matches," Prudhomme said. "He's gotten the chance to play with the WAC Player of the Year, which is a great experience for him, and Lorenzo is doing a good job of mentoring him."
In singles, Weber was able to halt Weber State's momentum with a win at No. 4 after the Wildcats had won in straight sets at No. 5. The freshman from Germany has impressed in his GCU debut after winning a long three-set match Saturday. Weber won easily, 6-2, 6-1, at Weber State on Sunday.
Fucile continued his strong play with a 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 win at No. 1, where he won a 10-7 tiebreaker for the third-set score. Newcomers Franke at No. 2 and
Laurent Magne at No. 6 each battled in three-set losses.
"
David Weber, playing at No. 4, got his second singles win in a row, which is great," Prudhomme said. "Lorenzo getting back-to-back wins at No. 1, he's starting off the year just like he left off, doing a good job leading the team on and off the court. And Laurent had back-to-back, third-set losses, so we were two matches away and we had the first set in two matches that we lost. So, the guys are putting themselves in winning positions."
The men head back to Phoenix for another two-match week at Arizona State on Thursday and at home against UC Riverside on Saturday.
