The Grand Canyon track and field team gets its 2019 season underway in Flagstaff, Ariz., at the Northern Arizona Friday Night Duals indoor meet on Friday.
Β
The Lopes are coming off indoor and outdoor WAC title sweeps on the men's and women's sides and have won three straight indoor WAC titles on both sides, as well.
Β
"We all are very excited for this season to begin, as we've had outstanding practices this fall in all event areas," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said.
Β
"We lost several very talented seniors to graduation last year but we've welcomed a lot of new faces to the program this year and are really excited to see how they perform with a GCU uniform on."
Β
The Lopes will take on Arizona's other three Division I programs at the Friday Night Duals. Arizona, Arizona State and host NAU will provide valuable competition for the Lopes early in 2019.
Β
GCU returns seven WAC individual champions, many of which will heavily impact the outcome of WAC Indoor Championships in February.
Β
Seniors
William Winfield IV and
Latoya Gilding are the lone returning indoor WAC champions. Winfield won the 60-meter hurdles in Idaho in 2018, while Gilding took home the hardware in the shot put.
Β
Flood and his coaching staff bolstered the roster at the semester with three big transfers.
David Kolar,
Knowledge Omovoh and
Cheyenne Walden come in with outstanding times and high ceilings for GCU.
Β
Kolar, a sprinter from the Czech Republic, comes in with personal-best times of 6.85 seconds in the 60, 10.42 (wind-aided) in the 100 and 21.02 in the 200.
Β
Omovoh comes to GCU from Nigeria, where she ran 53.51 in the 400, 12.07 in the 100 and 25.05 in the 200.
Β
Walden, a transfer from Oklahoma State, brings NCAA experience on the track and the cross country courses. Walden posted a 10:28.95 time in the 3,000 steeplechase to finish sixth at Big 12 Championships, sending her to the NCAA West Preliminary.
Β
GCU also will return redshirt freshman
Trey Johnson after the Tolleson, Ariz., native sat out the 2018 season due to injuries. Johnson, one of GCU's most touted high school recruits, will be a boost to the sprints, hurdles and jumps.
Β
GCU added a host of other
freshmen and transfers at the beginning of the year who also will make an immediate impact this season.
"As always with our first indoor meet, we will try and shake off a little holiday rust and begin our run to defend our team WAC titles in Nampa, Idaho, this year," Flood said.
Β
"If both teams stay healthy and hungry, we will have an excellent chance for both teams to be standing on the top of the podium again this year. We won't sneak up on anyone this year so we will have to earn every point we can at the WAC Indoor Championships in February to repeat as champions."
