FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Grand Canyon track and field team began its season with a handful of strong performances, highlighted by a pair of high jump marks that tied the school record.
"Overall, I'm fairly pleased with our performances at our first meet of the season," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said. "We were able to shake off the holiday rust, but we have a long way to go if we want to repeat as conference champions."
Senior high jumper
Chris Linnin Jr. finished second in the high jump as he matched the school record with a 2.05-meter leap. Fellow senior high jumper
Andrew Okonkwo also tied the school record, marking the second time that he has matched the 2.05-meter mark in Flagstaff.
Freshman
Moataz Hassan had a strong throw in the shot put. The Cairo, Egypt, native threw 15.61 meters on his second throw of the day and finished eighth in a deep field of throwers.
The women's 1,600-meter relay team finished second in 3 minutes and 50.74 seconds.
Senior hurdler
William Winfield IV also finished runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.13 seconds.
"We will get back to work Monday and try to get even better for the next meet at Air Force," Flood said.
The Air Force Team Challenge is set for 3 p.m. on Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
