Lopes down Seattle U, LMU at home 2 days in a row
The Grand Canyon women's swimming team completed a weekend home sweep Saturday, defeating Seattle U 133-65Â and Loyola Marymount 133-67 after also beating both visitors Friday.Â
"I cannot say enough about the heart and grit our women showed today and won all but one event," Lopes head coach Steve Schaffer said. "They raced very well and everyone contributed points to the win."
GCU swept the relay events, as Brigit Van Der Vegte, Marina McInelly, Kenya McCray and Diana Jaruseviciute started the meet off for the Lopes by winning the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3 minutes, 56.14 seconds.Â
The GCU 200 freestyle relay of Kyra Forrest, Roaia Mashaly, McCray and Jaruseviciute also won in 1:36.70.Â
Freshman Emily Muteti won the rigorous 1,000 freestyle for GCU in 10:55.2 and took second in the 200 butterfly (2:11.59).Â
After two individual wins each Friday, Mashaly and McInelly repeated the feat Saturday with Mashaly finishing first in the 100 and 200 freestyles (52.46, 1:54.38) and McInelly winning the 200 individual medley (2:10.20) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.29).Â
"Returners Marina McInelly and Roaia Mashaly led the way for us again," Schaffer said. "Both were very impressive this weekend as they both won four individual events for our team."
GCU freshman Hannah Barker also won the 500 freestyle (5:18.77) and finished second in the 200 IM (2:12.30)
Forrest picked up an individual victory in the 50 freestyle (24.40) and took second in the 100 freestyle (52.70).Â
Van Der Vegte added another individual victory to her weekend, winning the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:05.18.Â
"Our freshman were great today and all weekend and have really impressed the coaching staff," Schaffer said. "Having multiple freshman being able to compete in relays and win events early on makes me very excited for what is ahead."
Other notables for GCU included McCray's second-place finish in the 50 freestyle( 24.52). Karolina Dyrda taking third in the 200 freestyle (2:01.01) and Salma Zaitoun placing third in the 200 IM (2:12.82).
The Lopes are off next weekend, but return to action Nov. 2-3 when they head to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force's men and women and Northern Colorado's women.Â
