COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Grand Canyon women's swimming and diving team dropped three contests on the weekend, falling to Air Force on Friday and Saturday while losing to Northern Colorado on Saturday.
"Our women have been troopers dealing with a smaller squad to start with," Lopes head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "Each meet so far, we have been impacted by illness which spreads us pretty thin in covering events."
Day 1
GCU fell to Air Force on Friday evening, dropping Day 1 to the Falcons 132-111.
Brigit Van Der Vegte,
Marina McInelly,
Emily Muteti and
Diana Jaruseviciute got things rolling for GCU, winning the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3 minutes, 51.97 seconds.
Roaia Mashaly picked up her first victory of the weekend, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.22
Kyra Forrest finished in third with a time of 1:57.61.
In the 50 freestyle, Jaruseviciute finished second with a time of 24.31 and
Kenya McCray in third (24.40).

Karolina Dyrda in fourth (55.15).
"Kenya (McCray) continues to be one of our most improved returners and is becoming one of our top sprinters," Schaffer said. "She has worked unbelievably hard to get to where she is now. Her hard work is paying off."
Van Der Vegte won the 200 breaststroke for GCU with a winning time of 2:07.74.
Mashaly recorded her second individual win of the evening, winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17.05.
In the final event of the day, the Lopes earned the Day 1 relay sweep as Forrest, McCray, Muteti and Mashaly won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:33.10.

Nicole Yeakley finished sixth in the 3-meter (180.98) and seventh in the 1-meter (185.55).
"Diving went very well for the women against Air Force," Lopes head diving coach
Hunter Shafer said. "I was very impressed with Menna (El-Midany) and very impressed with the energy and confidence Tasmin (Stewart) and Nicole (Yeakley) dove with. Although the scores did not reflect their performance, it was positive for their development. We're looking forward to tomorrows competition."
Day 2
The Lopes dropped both contests Saturday morning, losing to Air Force 129-112 and Northern Colorado 134-107.
"It is never an easy meet coming up to Colorado Springs and competing at altitude, but our athletes did a superb job," Schaffer said. "The women fought for every point and keep their meets close."
The 200-yard medley relay team of Van Der Vegte, McInelly, Muteti and Jaruseviciute finished first in the event with a winning time of 1 minute, 45.83 seconds.
GCU finished second in the 200 freestyle relay as Forrest, Mashaly, McCray and Jaruseviciute finished with a time of 1:36.55.
Following two individual victories yesterday, Mashaly continued her success with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:55.39) and in the 100 freestyle (52.94).
Jaruseviciute, Van Der Vegte and Muteti also collected second-place finishes as Jaruseviciute took second in the 50 freestyle (24.05), Van Der Vegte in the 100 backstroke (59.23) and Muteti in the 100 butterfly (57.22).
"Roaia (Mashaly) raced extremely well this weekend as did
Kyra Forrest and
Brigit Van Der Vegte," Schaffer said. "Our younger group has been showing improvement every meet. I am excited to see what we can do in Iowa".

"The girls have been great about stepping up and filling in for events that may not be their favorites, "Schaffer said. "They are all showing great character and determination. I am very proud of them."
El-Midany continued to have an impressive showing, winning the 1-meter dive with 268.45 points and taking third in the 3-meter dive with 251.45 points. Stewart finished sixth in the 1-meter (211.70) and fifth in the 3-meter (222.25). Yeakley finished seventh in the 1-meter (207.10) and the 3-meter (203.15).
"Menna (El-Midany) won the 1-meter dive with a zone qualifying score," Shafer said. "She missed a few on the 3-meter but fought back for a thirds place finish. Tasmin (Stewart) and Nicole (Yeakley) dove very well and showed improvement from Day 1. All three did a great job this weekend and their talent and attitudes will help to their success as the season goes on."
GCU is back in action Nov. 15-17 as they head to Iowa City for the Hawkeye Invitational.
"This weekend was our last rehearsal before our mid-season taper meet in Iowa and I think we did a very good job of preparing both the men and women to have some impressive time drops there, "Schaffer said. "I'm really looking forward to seeing how we do. We still a long ways to go, but it has been a good start."
