MCALLEN, TEXAS -- The Grand Canyon women's golf team moved up the ranks throughout the day and is currently tied for fourth in the 13-team tournament hosted by UTRGV.
"Today was a tough day mentally because of the strong winds and tough conditions," Head Coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "The team battled and fought hard to maintain the position we are in, but we know we left too many shots out on the course. The team is refocused and ready for the final round."
The teams stayed within close range of one another, with the Lopes ending with a solid two round score of 630 led by
Courtney Vogel.
"I was very proud of Courtney and the way she handled the tough conditions," Giesecke added. "She has made a tremendous impact on our program in the couple months that she has been with us. She is a very hard worker and skilled player so it's exciting to see it pay off in tournament play."
Vogel fired a 75 on both rounds to land the top spot on the player leaderboard for the tournament. Sinking three birdies, Vogel ended Day 1 at a total of eight strokes over par.
Amy Ruelas followed up a first round 79 with an 80 and a tie for 22nd overall.
Deanna Salvatori rebounded from a +15 first round to shoot back-to-back birdies following a third, ending the second round at +7.  Â
The second and final day of the UTRGV Invitational continues tomorrow at McAllen Country Club. Â
