The Grand Canyon women's golf team shot the best round of the day to finish the GCU Invitational in third place on Sunday afternoon.Â
"I'm extremely proud of the team and their resiliency to fight back today," said head coach
Lauren Giesecke. "This was our best finish as a team and a few individual career bests as well. We were a bit nervous and anxious yesterday and unfortunately that showed in our score. Every one of the girls showed up this morning ready to play, and our motto for the day was to play tough... and they did just that. I'm so proud and excited about our continued success and improvement each tournament. The hard work and grind of the past few months is showing each and every tournament."
GCU had a pair of top-10 finishes as
Deanna Salvatori led the Lopes with a tie for fourth with rounds of 74-69-75.Â
Courtney Vogel finished with three straight birdies, notching a seventh place finish going 72-74-73.
The biggest move of the day for the Lopes went to
Amy Ruelas. Starting the day in 34
th place, Ruelas fired a 68, moving into the top-20 in 17
th place. Ruelas finished with rounds of 82-78-68.Â
"Amy had an impressive day shooting a 4-under, 68, her first time ever shooting 68," said Giesecke. "We love when the career bests happen in tournaments. Very proud of her grit and patience throughout the entire final round. We knew this round was coming from her and to do it in front of her parents was a pretty special thing."
Brittany Holen finished in 31
st with rounds of 79-78-80, while
Leleaga Meredith finished in 35
th place with rounds of 78-85-76.
GCU's individuals played well too, with
Carolina Sandstrom coming in 12
th place with rounds of 82-68-75.Â
Kylie Fong also played well with a 15
th place finish with rounds of 71-80-76.Â
Charatta Thongbai finished strong, coming in 37
th place at 82-80-78.
"With a 68 from Carolina, a 69 from Deanna and a 71 from Kylie, we are headed in the right direction," said Giesecke. "These scores showed the girls their abilities and will hopefully open the door to many more low rounds to come. It is really exciting to watch when they begin to tap into their potential, and realize how great they truly can be."
