MOSCOW, Id. -- The Grand Canyon women's swimming and diving team fought hard against the Idaho Vandals on Saturday, but ultimately suffered a loss of 171.5-128.5.Â
"Our travel schedule has caught up with us a bit," head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "We have not been at full strength with our women's team all semester and we had to leave four at home this trip due to illness. The girls really swam quite well, but we were just a bit out-gunned."Â
Estela Davis Ortiz led the Lopes, winning all three of her individual events in the 100-yard backstroke (55.28), 200-yard butterfly (2:04.69) and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.18).
Elisha Walker also had numerous first place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:22.18) and 500-yard freestyle (5:03.51).Â
Jovanna Koens and
Jade Howard placed first (50.96) and second (52.16), respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle. Howard went on to win the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.09.Â
Menna Elmidany racked up the points for the diving team, placing fourth in the 3-meter (265.89) and fifth in the 1-meter (235.20).Â
"We are looking forward to the next two weeks as we rest up for the WAC Championships," Schaffer continued. "The women have an excellent chance to have their best team finish ever."
This meet concluded the Lopes' regular season schedule. The men and women will be back in the water for the 2017 WAC Championships beginning Feb. 22-25.Â
