RIVERSIDE – The Grand Canyon women's golf team finished the 15-team Battle at the Rock in fourth place to kick off the spring season, easily its top finish of 2016-17.
"I'm extremely proud of our team today and throughout the entire tournament," said head coach
Lauren Giesecke. "They came into today's round ready to compete and climb up the leaderboard… we left some strokes out there, but the girls are ready to get home and get back to work! We are excited to see what the spring season has in store for this group."
Individually, GCU was led by
Courtney Vogel, firing rounds of 72-78-74, good for fifth place overall at the Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside. Vogel becomes just the second Lope to finish in the top-5 this season.
Also in the top-10 was
Deanna Salvatori who finished with rounds of 75-78-72. Salvatori birdied two of her final four holes to finish her round at even-par, tying the top score of the day.
"I'm so proud of Courtney and Deanna because of their determination and consistency throughout this tourney," said Giesecke. "This was Courtney's first tourney with us at GCU and we couldn't be more proud of the way she represented herself and our team."
As a team, the Lopes finished the tournament with a 917 score, including a final round 304, the best GCU round of the tournament. At +53, the Lopes finished behind champion Cal Poly (+39), Hawaii (+45) and UC Riverside (+49).
GCU finished ahead of several schools around the top-100 ranking (golfstat.com) including Santa Clara (77), UC Irvine (113) and CSU Fullerton (114).
The Lopes also finished over 20 strokes better than Seattle, a conference opponent. The Redhawks had the second best scoring average in the WAC this past fall season.
"This was a great showing for us to finish ahead of some conference and great ranked teams," said Giesecke.
Other finishers for the Lopes included
Leleaga Meredith (T37),
Amy Ruelas (T51) and
Kylie Fong (T56).
Grand Canyon is back in action on March 6-7 at the UTRGV Invitational in McAllen, Texas.
