RIVERSIDE – The Grand Canyon women's golf team completed a strong first day at the Battle at the Rock tournament, hosted by UC Riverside. The Lopes finished the first day in fifth place, in the 15-team tournament.
"I'm very proud of the way the team battled and played today," said head coach
Lauren Giesecke. "We have been preparing and training hard the last month and it showed today. They came out ready to compete and exceeded all expectations throughout both rounds."
In fifth place with a two round score of 614, GCU will aim to move up the standings in Tuesday's final round. The Lopes are just one stroke behind UC Riverside and two behind third-place Northern Arizona.
Individually,
Courtney Vogel led the tournament for parts of the day, finishing the first round with an even par 72, good for second-place. The freshman followed up her 72 with a 78, placing in the top-10 in eighth place.
Vogel took advantage of the par 5's, firing three of her four birdies on the par 5's.
Deanna Salvatori followed up a first-round 75 with a 78, good for a tie for 19
th place.
Amy Ruelas rebounded from an opening double-bogey in the first round to play five over the rest of the way to shoot a first-round 79. She is +16 along with teammate
Kylie Fong. Fong rebounded from a first-round 85, to shoot a 75 in the second round.
Leleaga Meredith also improved off her first round 82, firing a 75 in the second round, good for a tie for 39
th place.
The final round will take place on Tuesday at the Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside.
