PHOENIX – At the new GCU Golf Course, the Lopes' women's golf team hosted its first ever match as the squad faced Wyoming on Monday. The Lopes couldn't have started the spring season any better as first-year head coach
Lauren Giesecke picked up her first win as GCU defeated Wyoming.
In the match play format, GCU was able to win five of the seven groups led by
Kylie Fong as she recorded the lowest round on the day, shooting a 72.
"Very proud of the team for competing and staying focused throughout the day," Giesecke after her first win as head coach. "Today was the result from all their hard work and preparation during workouts, practice, and qualifying."
As a team, the Lopes shot 299 as a team, with four players shooting +8 or better. GCU recorded three personal bests today at the GCU Golf Course as Fong,
Charatta Thongbai and
Amy Ruelas combined to shoot +7 to help lead GCU to its first victory of the season. Fong was able to create a big lead throughout her round as she clinched the match 12 holes into the round.
Fong was able to find success on the greens today, converting many puts that helped her record the best round of the day. Fong ended the day at +1 and right behind her was Thongbai at +2 as she came away with a victory. Thongbai clinched the round by the 13th hole. Ruelas posted the third best score for the Lopes, shooting a 75 (+4) to come out on top in her group.
Samantha Barker also won her group as she ended her round at +8 and was able to seal up her win by the 16th hole. The final win of the day came from
Brittany Holen as she was the lone Lope in a group with Wyoming and Holen was able to come out on top, shooting +10 for the round.
"This should really raise the confidence level leading into our home tournament in a couple weeks," Giesecke said.
The Lopes will now prepare for the first ever tournament at GCU Golf Course. On Monday, Feb. 22
nd the Lopes will kick off the GCU Invitational and will last through Feb. 24
th as they welcome 14 schools to town.
