PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's golf team wrapped up its first ever GCU Invitational at the new GCU Golf Course on Wednesday against 13 other schools. As a team the Lopes struggled but
Charatta Thongbai moved up the player leaderboard finishing with a +18 for the tournament, putting her in a tie for 10th place. GCU finished in sixth place out of 14 teams.
"Overall it was fun to host our first tournament ever to kick off the season," head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "We can take a lot away from this tournament and learn from it. Hopefully in our next tournaments we can put ourselves in the same position and come out on top."
GCU struggled out of the gates through the first three holes to fall behind early while Portland State and South Dakota State separated themselves from the pack. Thongbai ended the final round with a +8, recording nine pars and one birdie.
Deanna Salvatori was two strokes behind Thongbai to end the invite in a tie for 18th place. After struggling on the back-9, Salvatori regrouped to record just one bogey on the back-9 along with eight pars.
In GCU's top five, the Lopes did not have a player lower than 35th place as
Samantha Barker finished in a tie for 25th place at +22. To round out the group,
Kylie Fong and
Amy Ruelas finished tied in 35th place at +25.
"We started out the final round just one stroke behind the lead and that means we have a lot of pressure shots that came our way," Giesecke said. "For a lot of our players, that is a first so it is good that they have that experience now under their belt."
Playing as an individual,
Julia Shin was tied for the best round from a Lope with a +6 for the third round with 10 pars and a birdie.
Brittany Holen was the final GCU player to compete in this week's invite, finishing in a tie for 52nd place at +30.
GCU's next tournament will start March 8, when they travel to California to participate in the Fresno State Classic.
