Wrestling Set to Compete at Iowa City Duals

PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon wrestling team are about to embark on its toughest test of the season as they compete in the Iowa City Duals. The Antelopes will square off against No. 2 in the country, Iowa, Cornell College and the defending NJCAA national champion, Iowa Central Community College. This will be the Lopes third road trip of the season as they look to face the best competition in the country.

In its first home match of the season, Grand Canyon saw many bright spots including three wins from Casey Larson, Kenny Moore and Cale Wilson. Larson was able to record GCU's first pin of the season at 165-pounds and Moore picked up his second victory of the season at 174-pounds.

This will be the first of six matches GCU will face on the road before heading home on Dec. 19 against Northern Illinois.

Scouting Iowa
The Hawkeyes are coming in hot after being ranked No. 2 in the country, receiving one first-place vote this week after a historical weekend against Oklahoma State. Iowa defeated top-ranked Oklahoma State 18-16 in front of a record 42,287 fans, the largest crowd in NCAA history at a dual meet. Sammy Brooks was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week.
Scouting Cornell College
The Rams have competed in two events this season and picked up a win in a dual meet with Simpson College 27-18. The last meet that Cornell College competed in was at the Lutheran Open, where the Rams were the runner-ups. Phillip Opelt is currently ranked as the No. 6 wrestler by D3wrestle.com at 133-pounds. Scouting Iowa Central CC
The Lopes will face the eight-time defending NJCAA national champion Tritons, who have competed in three open's this season including two in the state of Iowa. Jason Alfau is the only returner from last season's national championship squad that recorded a win for the Tritons in the championship match last season.
