GCU Loses To Big 12 Foe West Virginia

Grand Canyon University lost to West Virginia 42-0 in a non-conference dual meet at GCU Arena Saturday. The loss drops GCU to 0-4. West Virginia is 2-4.

"It definitely wasn't from a lack of effort," said GCU coach Jon Sioredas, whose starting lineup included three freshmen and four sophomores. "Our guys are continuing to work hard.

"Bringing in a Big 12 program is part of the process (in building our program), seeing where we need to go."

Two of GCU's veterans, juniors Chayse Jackson (157) and Marcus Haughian (197) had two of the closer matches. Jackson battled hard before falling 4-1 to Tim Wheeling. Haughian hung tough against Jake Smith, who came into the match with 13 wins, eventually dropping a close 5-2 decision.

GCU wrestles Jan. 11 at the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison, Colo. The Lopes wrestle duals against CSU-Pueblo, California Baptist and Western State. The next home match is Jan. 18 against Embry-Riddle and Bakersfield. The Lopes wrestle Embry-Riddle at 6 pm and Bakersfield at 8 p.m. in GCU Arena.
