Owuama, Gaun earn wins Saturday
The Grand Canyon University wrestling team fell to visiting Utah Valley Saturday, 30-6, inside the GCU Arena. The dual marked the Antelopes home opener.
In the opening match of the night, Uzo Owuama used a late takedown to win a 4-2 decision over Utah Valley's Matthew Ontiveros. With Saturday's victory, the freshman moved his season record to 6-5.
Austin Gaun won a thriller at 184, winning a tightly-contested 9-8 decision. After the third-period horn sounded, the score was knotted at 8-8, but the sophomore earned a point for riding time he had accumulated to edge the Wolverines' Ross Taylor. Gaun scored a reversal and grabbed a takedown late in the match to pick up his seventh win of the season.
"We had fun tonight," said GCU coach Jon Sioredas. "We think our guys are wrestling hard. We certainly have room to grow, but we thought the effort was great."
The Lopes will be back on the mat Dec. 5-6 when they travel to Las Vegas for the highly-touted Cliff Keen Invitational. The two-day event will take place inside the Las Vegas Convention Center and will feature several of the top teams from across the country.
