Grand Canyon sophomore Godwin Nyama-Cutler (133) and junior Marcus Haughian (197) each won matches against Minnesota, ranked No. 1 by InterMat Wrestling and Flo Wrestling and No. 2 in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, in Minneapolis Thursday.
GCU lost the dual to the Gophers 36-8.
Nyama-Cutler dominated his match in a 9-0 victory over Jordan Kingsley. Haughian was equally impressive with a 9-0 win over Chris Pfarr.
While those were the only Grand Canyon victories, other Lopes performed well against the nation's best. At 157, against top-ranked three-time All-American Dylan Ness, Chayse Jackson battled close before losing 6-1. In his first dual start of the season, Austin Uecker dropped a 10-6 decision to Jake Short at 149. Casey Larson lost by major decision to No. 15 Nick Wanzek at 165, but had significant riding time.
"We're going to take away a lot of positives and it was an overall good effort," said first-year GCU coach Jon Sioredas. "We fought hard tonight. It was great for our team to compete against the No. 1 team in the country."
The Antelopes host their first of four duals 7 p.m. Saturday at GCU Arena against Utah Valley. Fans unable to come out can follow live video at www.gculopes.com. UFC stars Benson Henderson, Joe Riggs and John Moraga will be signing autographs. The first 500 fans get GCU wrestling t-shirts.
