The Grand Canyon University women’s golf team is in third place after the first round of the NCAA D-II Women’s Super Region 4 Championship at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield, Ariz. The Antelopes shot a first-round total of 8-over 296 and trail Tarleton State (3-over, 291) by five shots. St. Edward’s is in second, one-stroke behind Tarleton.
The top three teams and top three individuals not with a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held on May 16-19 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Kentucky.
Ashley Mooney led the Antelopes today, shooting a 1-over 73, to finish in a tie for ninth place after 18 holes. She had two birdies today.
Jaqueline Lau of Tarleton State leads the individual competition after shooting a 4-under 68. She has a one-stroke advantage over Sonoma State’s Spence Heller.
GCU’s
Tiffany Hewetson and
Charlotte Jaengkit both posted a 2-over 74 and are tied for 11
th-overall. Teammates,
Brittany Penny and
Kelcey Tate carded 75’s and sit in a tie for 17
th.
The second round of the 54-hole Women’s Super Region 4 Championship will be played tomorrow on the Par-72 Heritage Red Course at the Wigwam Golf Resort. Start time for round two is scheduled for 7:30 a.m.
