Grand Canyon’s wrestling team is taking its talents to the road with dual meets scheduled in Texas and New Mexico.
Ranked No. 5 nationally by Basford and No. 7 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, GCU wrestles in the Texas Shootout in Plainview, Texas Saturday. Hosted by Wayland Baptist, GCU will wrestle the host school, Newman and Ouachita Baptist.
On Tuesday, GCU takes on Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M.
Saturday’s matches begin at 9 a.m. GCU (12-4) opens with Newman (3-9) prior to taking on Wayland Baptist (6-5) and Ouachita Baptist (5-5).

Ouachita boasts three nationally-ranked wrestlers, Dallas Smith (No. 5, 184), Garrett Evans (No. 7, 125) and Bobby Williams (No. 7, 157).
GCU has six wrestlers ranked in at least one of the national polls.

GCU’s 12 dual meet wins are tied for third most in the nation.
Tuesday’s match with Highlands is the first of five straight against RMAC opponents. GCU will wrestle Feb. 12 at Chadron State against the host and Colorado Mines and Feb. 15 at Fort Hays State against both the home team and Nebraska-Kearney. Both Fort Hays (No. 15 in the NWCA and No. 13 in Basford) and Kearney (No. 5 in the NWCA and No. 1 in Basford) are nationally ranked.
Ten days after the final duals (Feb. 25), GCU will return to Hays, KS for the RMAC/Super Region IV Championships, looking to qualify wrestlers for the national championships in March.
