Grand Canyon, ranked No. 5 nationally in the Basford poll and No. 7 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, won 24 of 30 matches and swept its triple-dual at the Texas Shootout hosted by Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Tex., Saturday.
GCU (15-4) opened with a 33-12 win over Newman and followed with a 44-3 triumph over Wayland Baptist and 34-8 victory over Ouachita Baptist.

McCrite and Estrada opened the match against Newman with wins by major decision. Bristol and Martin each won by fall and Carazo picked up six more points with a win by forfeit. Ward won by decision and Johnson picked up the team’s third major-decision victory of the morning.
Against the hosts, GCU won nine of 10 matches.
Celic Bell, who did not wrestle at 197 in the opener, Estrada and Johnson each won by pin. McCrite picked up a victory by technical fall, while major decision was the route to victory for Ward, Bristol and
Brett Sanchez (184). Carazo had the tightest match of the meet with an 8-7 victory over Jose Alvarez. Martin’s win was by injury default.
To wrap up the day, GCU won eight of 10 contests against a talented Ouachita Baptist team, who came in with three nationally-ranked wrestlers. GCU won two of the three matches.
McCrite, who is ranked No. 4 in the Basford poll, downed Garrett Evans 9-0, ranked No. 7 by the NWCA. Bristol, also No. 4 in his class in Basford, beat NWCA No. 7 Bobby Williams 7-4.
Sanchez lost to Dallas Smith, ranked No. 5 at 184, 9-1. Carazo, Martin and Johnson all won by fall.
Eric Fan, at 197, Estrada and Ward all won by decision.
GCU will wrestle Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe New Mexico Highlands 7 p.m. Tuesday in Las Vegas, N.M.
