The Notre Dame de Namur lacrosse team scored seven straight goals in the second half to give itself an insurmountable lead as it defeated Grand Canyon University, 17-5, today in Belmont, Calif.
The Antelopes fell to 1-6 on the season, while the Argonauts, who beat the 'Lopes 16-4 in both teams' season opener on Feb. 6 in Phoenix, improved to 5-3.
GCU scored the first two goals in today's game, but Notre Dame de Namur quickly responded by scoring three goals of its own. Both teams scored once more in the half to make the halftime score 6-3.
The 'Lopes and Argos swapped goals in the opening minutes of the third period, but Notre Dame de Namur then broke the game open with its seven unanswered goals to make the score 14-4. The Argos ended the game on a three-goal streak.
Notre Dame de Namur outshot GCU, 51-24, and picked up 41 ground balls to just 18 for GCU. The Argos won 18 of 24 faceoffs in the game.
GCU's goals were scored by freshman attack Konner Klein (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain), freshman attack John Casmedes (Plano, TX/Plano West Senior), sophomore midfield Kyle Bailey (Golden, CO/Golden), senior attack Scott Franks (Lakewood, OH/St. Ignatius) and sophomore attack Jacob Hippensteel (Chandler, AZ/Chandler).
Sophomore goalie Andrew Hunter (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) made 21 saves, including 15 in the first half.
Kevin Nguyen scored a career-high five goals for Notre Dame de Namur, and Conrad Clevlen added a hat trick.
The 'Lopes play Dominican University of California at 1 p.m. tomorrow in San Rafael, Calif.
